With a population of 62,000, Tamworth is one of the fattest towns in NSW – with almost 50 per cent of people overweight or obese.
West Tamworth also has the third-highest rate of premature deaths from heart and lung diseases and cancers in NSW.
So Michelle is stepping in to help them shape up, launching her 12-Week Body Transformation program there, encouraging rural residents to beat the battle of the bulge.
“Out came these statistics, so I sat down with my team and said we need to do something,” Bridges said.
“I’m over hearing the research, and then there’s no solution. There’s no action.”
Education is key
“It’s a complex issue, but Tamworth is not alone,” Bridges said.
“The rising obesity rates and health complications that come with that are rising across the country.
“Having gone out and spoken to local farmers and families, what was coming through over and over again was, I just want to know how to get started, or I just need to learn to cook again.
“It’s really about education and knowledge and bringing that together in a package.”
A tailored package
Michelle and her team have tailored the program for the New England area – allowing locals to connect and come together to improve their health.
“We start together on the 16th of September, and we’re going to finish with a massive group workout in Tamworth on the 8th of December,” Bridges said.
“I’ve also teamed up with a great set of rural exercise physiologists who will be out there helping people in the New England area.
“It’s now become a priority and not a luxury for these guys.”
