(NBC News) – World health experts have issued new guidelines when it comes to lowering your risk for dementia.
According to the World Health Organization, one of the best ways to lower your risk is to follow a healthy lifestyle.
That includes getting plenty of exercise, avoiding smoking, overeating and too much alcohol.
The WHO says there is moderate evidence showing a Mediterranean-style diet may reduce the risk of cognitive decline.
And despite being promoted for brain health, experts say there is no proof that fish oil supplements or Vitamins B or E actually work.
The WHO also says there is little evidence that activities aimed at boosting thinking skills are actually beneficial.
According to the WHO, nearly 50 million people worldwide suffer from dementia, with nearly 10 million new cases each year.
