Health Dept: Warning signs and tips to beat the winter blues – WEAU

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) — After a few days of severely cold weather you may be feeling a little stir crazy and that combined with the season known for winter blues can be an unhealthy mix.

This bone-chilling weather may seem like the perfect excuse to stay inside, curl up and binge watch a good show but the Eau Claire City-County Health Department says that’s not a good idea for your health; at least not long-term!

Instead public health nurse Chelsie Smith says to find ways to connect socially for mental well-being and get moving for your physical health.

“If you’re not eating healthy, you’re not exercising, you tend to be a little more tired so you’ll notice that people are sleeping a little bit more, you tend to get a little bit more cranky in general over the winter,” explained Smith.

At Highland Fitness in Eau Claire Nicole Nelson says she keeps active by exercising to beat back the winter blues!

Nelson said, “Just get moving a little bit because otherwise I think I’m stuck at my desk or stuck on the coach watching TV. It’s good to get out!”

Another great way to beat the winter blues is to get out and get some sunshine! On days it might be a little too chilly to embrace the cold the health department says there are other ways to get vitamin D like eating food that contain it such as salmon or eggs or trying supplements.

Smith added, “We always talk about being physically healthy but we always tend to forget about our brain health and making sure our brain is healthy and feeling the best that we can.”

The health department says if you notice you’re feeling depressed, have headaches or stomach aches or are feeling fatigued for two or more weeks it may be time to check with your healthcare provider.

“Sometimes we have the winter blues and those can lead into Seasonal Affective Disorder and that can lead into depression so making sure that we’re taking care of ourselves as much as we can is a benefit,” said Smith.

The health department also says it’s never a bad idea to check-in with your friends, co-workers and neighbors as well.
