Simon Pegg didn’t expect his recent body transformation to cause such a commotion.
The Star Trek actor hit headlines in March when his personal trainer Nick Lower posted a picture on Instagram showing his appearance after six months of training and dieting to play a hostage victim in upcoming indie thriller Inheritance.
The image depicted a topless Pegg looking noticeably thinner and leaner and sporting a new six-pack.
The British star has now admitted to British GQ magazine that he had no idea the picture would become such a big deal.
“The response from that picture was so weird,” he said. “Some people said, ‘You look ill,’ which is what my wife thought. Others were saying, ‘Well done’.
And the thing is, it wasn’t meant to be an aspirational thing. It was a snapshot that my trainer took and I really didn’t expect the furore that followed. All I can think of is that people still think of me as that schlubby guy from Shaun of the Dead.”
To prepare for the role, Pegg spent six months doing strength work, circuit training, core exercises and daily 10 kilometre runs. He eventually lost 20 pounds (nine kilograms) and cut his body fat from 12 to eight per cent.
As a result, the 49-year-old has found himself “probably addicted to training” now that filming is over, as he feels “out of sorts” if he doesn’t do a form of exercise every day.
“You release so many endorphins every day (when training) that when you stop what you get is an endorphin deficit and that makes you feel a little bit down,” he explained.
“So, doing all that training, then doing the movie and then going back to eating pies again actually made me feel a little bit low afterwards. Losing that focus and that goal-orientated training was quite tough.”
